<p><span style="color: rgb(14, 16, 26);">Adam’s bridge gets its name from the Abrahamic myth that Adam crossed the bridge on his way to stand repentant on Adam’s peak (a mountain in the centre of Sri Lanka) for 1000 years. It’s also known as Rama’s bridge which comes from the Indian epic Ramayana, where Rama created the bridge to rescue his wife Sita. Either way, it is a limestone chain of islands which it’s believed once made it possible to walk from Sri Lanka to India, and offers shallow and flat water for kitesurfing!&nbsp;</span></p><h3>Adam’s Bridge kitesurfing wind conditions</h3><p><span style="color: rgb(14, 16, 26);">The two seasons in Sri Lanka offer very different kitesurfing conditions. In the summer season from May until October the wind starts off a little lighter in the morning around 15-18 knots and by lunch time is generally blowing 25+ and even getting up to 40 knots some days. The lagoon has many shallow spots and it can be difficult to see where the water is shallow (ankle deep!), so be very careful when jumping and make sure you know it’s deep enough underneath you! There is only one kite school that teaches here, and they can give you all the information on where to kitesurf or jump, and offer a tractor to the spot and boat rescue. If you want to just kitesurf yourself that’s also possible and there’s another kite camp nearby, you’ll just have to kiteboard upwind from the launch a few hundred metres.</span></p><p><span style="color: rgb(14, 16, 26);">Winter season from December until February the wind blows the opposite direction and only in the afternoon, meaning the ocean side is butter flat and the best for kitesurfing, but it is an offshore spot so more suited to advanced riders. It’s a magical place to hydrofoil as you have unspoilt kilometres to cruise up and down and the water at this time of year is blue and beautiful. Beginners can still learn to kitesurf in the lagoon or from a boat in this season, and the wind tends to be a bit lighter between 14-19 knots. Sri Lanka is warm all year, so board shorts and tshirt are all you need for kitesurfing, but sun protection is incredibly important as the sun is intense.</span></p><h3>Around the kite spot Adam’s Bridge</h3><p><span style="color: rgb(14, 16, 26);">There is not much else to do at Adam’s bridge apart from kitesurf and chill. The kite camps are the only places you’ll run into any other travellers, and the local area is very poor and undeveloped. You can head out and try some local food if you have your own transport, but most people come here and stay at one of the camps full board. Jaffna is a worthwhile day trip while you’re here, to see some of the Tamil Hindu area in the North of Sri Lanka. There are many temples to be seen and the old Jaffna fort, the locals are incredibly welcoming and lovely, and the vegetarian food is excellent and quite different in taste to the rest of Sri Lanka.</span></p><h3>How to get to Adam’s Bridge and how to move there</h3><p><span style="color: rgb(14, 16, 26);">You’ll need to fly to Colombo Bandaranaike Airport (CMB) and then get a taxi or drive yourself to get to Adam’s bridge. It’s a long trip, around 6 hours if you are lucky and don’t hit too much traffic, as roads in Sri Lanka are slow. If you are driving yourself then be careful, the local driving style can be a shock to visitors and you need to be aware of motorbikes, tuktuks, cows, goats etc doing stupid things without warning.&nbsp;</span></p>

<p>Adam's Bridge offers a flat water lagoon for kiteboarding with pumping wind during the summer, and choppy waves on the upwind side of the sandbar. In the winter the wind blows in the opposite direction and so the ocean side offers a stunning playground for hydrofoil kiteboarding and freestyle kitesurfing in offshore wind. With 8 months of wind in the year it’s unsurprising that Adam’s bridge is becoming more popular for kitesurfing, but it’s still very remote without much in the way of infrastructure close by and so isn’t anywhere as busy as the area around Kalpitiya.</p>

<h3>Kitesurfing wind conditions in Kalpitiya Lagoon</h3><p>The two seasons in Kalpitiya lagoon are very different. The Southwest monsoon season is from the end of May until the end of September, and the wind blows most days between 20 and 25 knots. During this season the wind in the lagoon can be gusty, so anyone looking for perfect unhooked freestyle kiteboarding conditions will want to avoid it and go to Vella island instead. Beginners and intermediate kitesurfers will get on fine in the lagoon during this season, and it offers a fantastic place to learn and practice hooked in tricks. There are shallow areas nearer shore which are flatter and make it perfect for anyone learning.</p><p>In the winter season between mid December and mid March the wind blows from the Northwest and picks up later in the day, around lunch time. The wind in this season is a little lighter averaging 15-19 knots, but it is much more stable and Kalpitiya lagoon is at its absolute best for freestyle at this time. There is an amazing sandbar which creates a butter flat zone right behind it in this season and is a lot of fun, but advanced riders should be aware and give way to any beginners.</p><h3>Around the kite spot Kalpitiya Lagoon</h3><p>There isn’t a whole lot of infrastructure around Kalpitiya, so don’t expect fancy bars and restaurants. Most accommodation options offer full board, and the only bars are the ones at the kite camps themselves, but there are regular parties during the kite seasons at the various resorts, so if you fancy a party you’ll find one.</p><p>Wilpattu national park is around an hour away from Kalpitiya where you can see elephants, leopards and sloth bears if you are lucky, all year. Sigiriya rock, Dambulla and Anuradhapura are all within a day trip of Kalpitiya but roads are slow in Sri Lanka so you’re better off taking a few days off kitesurfing for a proper trip to see some other places further afield. From December-March you can go dolphin watching, whale watching or diving in the morning before the wind kicks in.</p><h3>How to get to Kalpitiya Lagoon and how to move there</h3><p>Fly to Colombo Bandaranaike airport (CMB) and the simplest option is to get a taxi, which will take around 3-4 hours to reach Kalpitiya. All the kitesurf accommodations can organise this for you in advance or you can find one when you arrive, just be prepared to barter. You can rent a car yourself, but the roads in Sri Lanka can be dangerous if you don’t adapt quickly to the local driving style, where traffic rules seem to be more “guidelines” than anything else. If you are in Sri Lanka purely for a kitesurfing trip just get a taxi, in and around Kalpitiya you can get a tuktuk, or rent a scooter if you want to explore more.</p>

<p>Kalpitiya lagoon in the Northwest of Sri Lanka offers a large playground for all levels of kitesurfers, with reasonably flat water and two wind seasons, for a total of 8 months of kitesurfing in the year. Sri Lanka is a gorgeous tropical island situated in the Indian ocean, with a variety of flat water kiteboarding spots, consistent wind and incredibly friendly and welcoming locals. It’s exploded in popularity in the last few years, but hasn’t yet grown to be an overly touristy mess like some other spots in Asia.</p>

<h3>Kitesurfing wind conditions in Kappalady Lagoon</h3><p>The two kitesurfing seasons here are very different, so plan your trip accordingly! Summer from mid May until the end of September offers the best conditions for this lagoon, with average wind of around 20-25 knots most days. The lagoon is shallow on the upwind side which is where the beginners will be, and lessons are taught by the local schools. Downwind is deeper and better suited to practicing your freestyle kiteboarding tricks. You can walk across the sandbar to the beach to launch your kite, or pay for launching at one of the kite schools on the spot.</p><p>Winter here is less consistent and generally Kalpitiya lagoon offers more wind and more days of kitesurfing. When the wind swings more Westerly the Kappalady lagoon can be a lot of fun for kiteboarding, but those perfect sessions are definitely less in the winter. The wind picks up around lunch time and averages 13-17 knots most afternoons from mid December until the end of February.</p><h3>Around the kite spot Kappalady Lagoon</h3><p>Kappalady is a tiny village with not much else going on. There are a few kite schools and some upmarket accommodation options, with a few cheaper ones nearby, but no bars so don’t expect a party scene. You can eat at the local roti huts but mainly you’ll be eating and drinking at your accommodation. If you want more of a party then Kalpitiya has some better options at the various larger kite camps. During winter (December-March) from Kappalady you can organise dolphin and whale watching trips in the morning before the wind picks up.&nbsp;</p><p>For a day trip you can visit Wilpattu national park to try and spot leopards, elephants and sloth bears, or go to Anuradhapura to see some ancient temples, or get up early to climb Sigiriya rock. For other spots in Sri Lanka you’ll want to take more time, as the roads are slow and travel takes time.</p><h3>How to reach Kappalady Lagoon and how to move there?</h3><p>You’ll want to fly to Colombo Bandaranaike international airport (CMB) and then get a taxi up to Kappalady. You can drive yourself but the roads can be sketchy if you aren’t used to the driving style, and in Kappalady itself you won’t be needing a car as you can walk everywhere. The trip from the airport takes between 3 and 4 hours depending on traffic.</p>

<p>Kappalady lagoon is a small lagoon around 15km South of Kalpitiya, with warm water and wind for kitesurfing nearly 8 months of the year. It offers less gusty wind than the Kalpitiya lagoon in the summer season from May until September, and flat water for freestyle kiteboarding. It’s the best spot that you don’t need a boat to get to, which makes it a popular place to kitesurf in the area. The lagoon can get busy quickly in the season so knowing how to kitesurf close to others is essential here, but it’s the nicest kite spot in the summer season if you don’t want to get a boat to Vella island. The village itself is very small and the locals are generally friendly and helpful to any foreigners.</p>
