As such it’s a popular weekend destination for local kitesurfers and beginners, and although the water is muddy brown it’s a fantastic place to learn to kitesurf or to upgrade your freestyle kiteboarding skills. Due to the local microclimate and the river flowing into the ocean here the forecast doesn’t show the wind very well, so your best bet is to reach out to the local kite schools for a more accurate picture of the conditions on any given day. You’ll also need to drive out to get to the beach, so a 4x4 is definitely handy to ensure you don’t get stuck in the sand.

Speed spot in Dakhla is probably the best known freestyle kiteboarding spot in Morocco, with a huge area of butter flat water at low tide, and pumping wind almost every day during the season. The wind blows directly offshore so it’s not a beginner kite spot, you need to at the very least be able to kitesurf upwind, and being comfortable with how to self rescue is definitely helpful too! If you come from one of the kite accommodations some offer a boat rescue service but not all, so it’s worth checking how it works before you head out kitesurfing. It’s a stunning and remote spot in the middle of the desert, but it’s amazing and there's a good reason for its popularity.

The easiest way to get there is with a boat, 4x4 or get a ride with a tractor out to the spot, just remember the tide will come in at some point so leave any belongings in a high and dry place. You can also just kite over to speed spot, it will just require a bit of a downwind and then upwind slog but it’s very doable.

The waves can get really big here, and the launch isn’t exactly the easiest with a big shore break to get through, but it’s totally worth it for the kitesurfing conditions once you get out. The wave kitesurfing world tour has stopped here more than once, and it’s home to Mitu Monteiro and Airton Cozzolino, two of the best wave kitesurfers in the world. If you could name a reason they got so good, it might be having Ponta Preta on their doorstep!

If you’re lucky you’ll get to see them in action in the waves, and if conditions are perfect you can head to Ponta Preta to watch or partake in some serious wave riding. Santa Maria is the local town where there is generally a really good vibe with all the kitesurfers hanging out in the evening, and the local seafood is as fresh as can be!

The wind blows cross onshore, so it’s perfect if you aren’t super comfortable with the waves as you know you will always be blown back to the beach.
