Most of the year here the wind blows between 25 and 35 knots, with the lightest wind in May and June when it can be 15-25 knots, but more gusty and inconsistent. The best kite sessions will be in the morning or in the late afternoon, when the wind is most consistent and blowing fully offshore. In the middle of the day it can swing more cross shore making for less fun conditions, but still perfectly kiteable.</p><h3>Around the kite spot Cabo de la Vela</h3><p>Nearby you can take a short trip to hike up Pilon de Azucar to see an amazing panorama of the Guajira desert, and experience a sacred place for the Wayuu people. The sunsets from Cabo de la Vela looking West over the Caribbean are incredible, or you can head down to Playa del Pilon after climbing the Pilon and have a dip in the ocean. It’s a quiet little place with not much going on, but you’ll find local hospitality with some small restaurants, and the Wayuu people are known for their woven bags, so if you want to pick up a few gifts for family or friends these make for nice keepsakes.&nbsp;</p><h3>How to get to Cabo de la Vela and how to move there</h3><p>The simplest way to get here is to fly to Riohacha (RCH) vía Bogotá, and then get a taxi the remaining two hours to Cabo de la Vela. If you book in advance through your accommodation provider you’ll save yourself some hassle on arrival. If you do decide to just get a taxi at the airport just be sure to barter and agree a price up front.</p>

It’s a very relaxed destination where the main activity other than kitesurfing is going to be relaxing and taking in the local culture, but if you’re looking for a remote flat water kite spot then this definitely has to make the shortlist. The Wayuu indiginous people are still living in the Guajira area, and the remote location means it still has a fairly untouched feel compared to a lot of South American kite spots.</p>

<h3>Kitesurfing wind conditions in Santa Veronica</h3><p>The kitesurfing season in Santa Veronica is from December until April, with the most constant strong wind from January until March. The swell is difficult to forecast as it can change with tides and the moon cycle, but it also tends to pick up with the wind, so as a general rule the strongest days will offer the largest waves. The shore break along the main beach can be quite large, so if you are uncomfortable jumping on your kiteboard and starting straight away you might find it easier to body drag through the breakers and then get riding. The weather is warm and the water too, so you won’t be needing a wetsuit to kitesurf here, but make sure you protect yourself from the sun.</p><p>For the best flat water and freestyle kiteboarding you’ll probably want to head down to the point at Salinas del Ray or get a ride to Palmarito (which is also where most beginner lessons will take place).</p><h3>Around the kite spot Santa Veronica</h3><p>You won’t find a whole lot to do other than kitesurf here, but there are a few options for days off and if you are there at the right time. The first is El Totumo, an active mud volcano which is rumoured to offer healing properties, perfect for soaking those aching muscles after a long day on the water. Another option is to visit the pink lagoon “Salinas de Galerazamba” between Santa Veronica and Cartagena, a salt mine which during February and March goes an incredible pink colour when water levels are low.</p><h3>How to get to Santa Veronica and how to move there</h3><p>You can fly to Barranquilla (BAQ), Cartagena (CTG), or Santa Maria (SMR) airports, all of which are within 1-3 hours drive from Santa Veronica. You can either rent your own car, get a taxi or go with public transport. Getting the bus will obviously take a little longer and will require some research in advance, but saves you a lot of money if you are travelling on a budget. The easiest option is to book and shuttle through one of the local kite schools.</p>

<p>Santa Veronica is a beautiful and remote beach with a mix of waves, chop and flat water, and 90% days over 16 knots during the season from December until March. You can launch anywhere on the beach and there are a number of different spots to enjoy, with the point at Salinas del Ray offering the cleanest waves with a big swell. There’s no ATM directly in town, so you’ll want to make sure you get some cash out before arriving for use at the local restaurant and stores. The area is not really developed around tourism and as such there aren’t a whole lot of other options, but with such a high percentage of windy days it’s unlikely you’ll have time to do anything other than kitesurf!</p>
