The beach is rocky here, so you’ll want to be a little careful walking in and out of the water, and beginners will generally want shoes or booties. There is some flat water close to the beach and behind the point, but the wind can drop a bit there.&nbsp;</p><p>Beginners will be closer to the beach, where they can stand easily enough and there are a few&nbsp;kite schools on the spot that you can learn with. Going a little further afield Nafpaktos and Patras are the nearest larger towns, where you can find a bit more going on as well as some more history and culture if that’s your thing. Check out the castle in Nafpaktos for an enjoyable afternoon, just be aware you’ll need to pay the toll to cross the bridge to get there</p><h3>How to reach Cape Drepano and how to move there</h3><p>Fly into Athens International Airport (ATH) and rent a car to get to Drepano, you’ll want the car to get around anyway as the spot isn’t near any of the accommodation options. It’s around a 2 hour drive from the airport to Drepano and is a pretty easy drive on good roads.</p>

<p>Cape Drepano has become famous in recent years as pro kitesurfers like Youri Zoon and Paula Novotna have been going there to train, and posting pictures and videos of this idyllic flat water spot on instagram. It offers steady wind and butter flat water behind the “sand” bank at low tide in both West and East wind directions, and you can kitesurf year round, although summer is the main season. It offers wind 250+ days per year but can be fickle and sometimes only a few hours kitesurfing at a time, so it’s best to consult the forecasts and get in touch with the local kite schools if you aren’t sure.&nbsp;</p><p>As it’s not far from Athens it can get crowded with other kitesurfers particularly at weekends in the season, and you’re pretty likely to run into European pro kitesurfers as it’s a nearby destination with consistent wind. Due to the wind direction, size and shape of the spot this is much more suited to intermediate and advanced riders who are comfortable riding in a rotation: i.e. come in, do your trick, ride out, repeat, so everyone gets a spot to practice. You can learn here with a local school if they offer boat rescue, but it’s not a particularly beginner friendly place.</p>

<h3>Kitesurfing wind conditions in Aliki Beach</h3><p>The wind usually begins to blow most afternoons from late May and remains until mid-to-late October. This is the Meltemi wind season, the thermal wind which gives much of the area such amazing wind statistics. As it's a thermal wind the forecasts don’t always show it completely accurately, so for a better picture you can chat to the local kite schools to know what to look for. Generally the wind starts light in the morning and picks up by lunchtime, and then blows all the way until sunset. The sunset kite sessions here are incredible, and well worth the trip!</p><p>The water is flatter close to shore, and you can get some rolling ocean chop and small waves breaking onto the shallower area, so there’s a little bit of something for everyone. Strapless riding and hydrofoiling are very popular here, and it’s a great place to practice for anyone at any level.</p><h3>Around the Kite spot: Aliki Beach</h3><p>The actual spot at Aliki is pretty remote, the only other residents being the pink flamingos that give the local kite school its name. So for more action you’ll want to move around the island a bit, which is where a rental car would be highly recommended. There are also a number of other places to kite on Lemnos so you can pick and choose depending on the day and your mood.&nbsp;</p><p>There are quite a few stunning beaches on Lemnos, with crystal clear water perfect for swimming, or if you fancy getting your heart rate up you can climb up to some of the various castle ruins scattered over the island.&nbsp;</p><h3>How to get to Aliki Beach and how to bring it about while you're there</h3><p>Lemnos international airport (LXS) is the one on the island itself, and from there it’s highly recommended to rent a car. You can get around with taxis and buses but really a car is going to make life much easier for you. If you can’t find a decent flight it’s also possible to fly to Athens and then take a ferry from there to Lemnos, it will just take a while longer as it’s one of the islands further from Athens.</p>

It’s got a shallow spot closer to shore perfect for beginners to learn kitesurfing, and then drops off deep pretty quickly making this a perfect place for practicing or learning hydrofoil kitesurfing. The island of Lemnos offers plenty in terms of beaches and beauty, and also has a lot of history (as do so many of the Greek islands!) so it makes for a good family kite holiday destination with a bit of everything to keep all members happy (if they aren’t already kitesurfing too!). The wind here normally only comes later in the day, so it’s a lazy kind of vibe in the mornings, great for when you just want to unwind and not stress yourself with catching the perfect wind.</p>
